The Controller will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations of a private school, ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective budgeting, and compliance with financial regulations. This role includes managing the accounting department, preparing financial statements, conducting audits, and providing financial insights to support the school's strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management and Reporting:
- Oversee the preparation and distribution of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure all financial records are maintained in compliance with school policies and regulatory requirements.
- Manage the school’s general ledger, including reconciliation of accounts and ensuring accuracy in all financial transactions.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Develop and manage the annual budget in collaboration with school administration and department heads.
- Monitor budget performance, identify variances, and provide actionable insights to ensure financial goals are met.
- Prepare long-term financial forecasts and financial models to support strategic planning.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Implement and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard school assets and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations and reporting requirements.
- Conduct internal audits and coordinate external audits, addressing any issues that arise.
Cash Management:
- Manage cash flow to ensure the school has adequate liquidity to meet its obligations.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring timely payments and collections.
- Monitor investment performance and ensure adherence to investment policies.
Payroll and Benefits Administration:
- Oversee payroll processing, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Administer employee benefit programs, including retirement plans, health insurance, and other benefits.
Financial Analysis and Strategic Support:
- Provide financial analysis and insights to support school leadership in decision-making processes.
- Participate in strategic planning and provide financial perspectives on various initiatives and projects.
- Prepare financial presentations for the board of trustees and other stakeholders as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent professional certification.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
- Experience in the education sector or non-profit organizations is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial regulations.
