MAINTENANCE WORKER
SUMMARY
Perform manual and semi-skilled tasks related to the operation, maintenance and repair of City facilities.
Operate and maintain trucks, tractors and other mechanical equipment in the performance of job duties. Assist in the upkeep and maintenance of City parks. Perform related work as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Public Works and the Assistant Director of
Public Works.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties. (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.)
1. Operate a variety of hand and power-driven tools in the performance of such tasks as installing and repairing water mains, service lines, hydrants and related equipment. Repair and clean sewer lines, plant and maintain lawns and trim trees, patch and replace sidewalks and pavements, install and repair traffic signs and markings.
2. Install and repair water meters, record meter readings, investigate complaints regarding water consumption and leaks, and assist in the operation and maintenance of pumping equipment.
3. Collect and dispose of rubbish.
4. Operate trucks, tractors and other motorized equipment such as back hoes, front loaders, street sweepers, compressors, snow plows and others.
5. Maintain and perform minor repairs on City buildings and related facilities.
6. Maintain and perform minor repairs on vehicles, mechanical equipment and power tools.
7. Load and move materials, furniture and equipment.
8. Maintain wells and lift station.
9. Perform related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, QUALIFICATIONS & KSAs (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities) FOR
EMPLOYMENT
All of the following functions, qualifications, KSAs and duties are essential. An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following:
- Knowledge of the safety practices, tools, procedures and materials utilized in common public works maintenance and repair operations and skill in applying them in completing regular and emergency assignments
- Knowledge of traffic regulations and equipment operation procedures and practices and skill in applying them in the safe and efficient operation of assigned City equipment
- Knowledge of basic mechanical repair tools and procedures and skill in applying them in the safe and efficient operation of assigned City equipment
- Knowledge of basic mechanical repair tools and procedures and skill in applying them in maintaining and making minor repairs to a variety of vehicles, mechanical equipment and power tools
- Knowledge of the tools and procedures of basic carpentry, painting, plumbing and cement finishing and skill in applying them in maintaining and making minor repairs to City buildings and related facilities
- Skill in making basic mathematical computations and in following oral and written instructions to complete duties 1 and 2
- Mechanical aptitude and physical coordination required to operate complicated mechanical equipment to complete duties 1 - 8
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds on a regular basis to complete duties
- Ability to walk, crawl, climb and maneuver where physical mobility is required to complete duties
- Strength and physical condition sufficient to perform hard labor involving the operation of air hammers, heavy lifting, shoveling and working in excavations to complete duties 1 – 8
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and the general public
- Educational requirements include a high school diploma or a GED. One (1) year of related experience is required.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license and CDL required.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF WORK
Employees in this class are periodically required to serve ON-CALL weeks during which they must make themselves available 24 hours per day to respond to storms and other emergencies. During such emergencies they may be required to work long hours under adverse weather conditions.
