The purpose of this position is to provide the services required by the May 13, 2024 Memorandum of Understanding between Ferrum College and Franklin County School Board entitled “Support for Provisionally Licensed Teachers.” It states that Ferrum College will hire a Provisional Licensure Mentor to support a cohort of twenty currently employed teachers who are currently operating with a provisional license who would benefit from completing the 21-credit undergraduate certificate in Professional Studies in Education for Licensure and specifies that this individual will receive a 12-month contract for approximately 30 hours per week of work to provide instruction of six courses and to establish mentoring relationships with the cohort of teachers. (According to the Memorandum of Understanding, this agreement is in effect July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.)
Essential Functions:
- Prepare and teach six courses: Foundations and Trends, Classroom Management and Differentiated Instruction, Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Strategies, Assessment of and for Learning, Developmental and Diagnostic Reading, and Content Area Reading. (These courses will be scheduled one per term throughout the calendar year and taught in an online, asynchronous manner.) Course enrollment will be between 20 and 25 students per class, and some classes will be differentiated by the endorsement area being sought by those enrolled.

Winter 2024: EDU-353/355/358-001 (Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Strategies)
Spring I 2025: EDU-359-101 (Assessment of and for Learning)
Spring II 2025: EDU-310-201 (Developmental and Diagnostic Reading)
Summer I 2025: EDU-312-101 (Content Area Literacy)
- Work with the Director of Human Resources at Franklin County School Board to establish mentoring relationships with a cohort of 20 teachers who are progressing toward full licensure from their current status as a provisionally licensed teacher in Franklin County. To support these teachers, this individual will:
- Conduct four classroom observations for each teacher in the cohort with feedback meeting and written report.
- Conduct four virtual mentoring sessions for each teacher in the cohort with written report.
- Schedule and attend quarterly meetings with school division leadership to discuss progress of the teachers in the cohort and the overall effectiveness of the program.
Summer II 2024: Establish mentoring relationships, develop observation and reporting schedule, construct course curricula
Fall 2024: Classroom observation in first nine weeks (approximately 3h per teacher, 60h total)
Winter 2024: Classroom observation in second nine weeks (approximately 3h per teacher, 60h total)
Spring 2024: Classroom observation in third nine weeks (approximately 3h per teacher, 60h total)
Spring 2024: Classroom observation in fourth nine weeks (approximately 3h per teacher, 60h total)
- Support other instructors of the courses offered in the Professional Studies in Education for Licensure certificate.
- Cultivate relationships with the Virginia Department of Education and other school divisions for promotion of the Professional Studies in Education for Licensure certificate.
- Encourage mentored teachers to continue their professional journey by applying to Ferrum College’s M.Ed. program and then provide recommendations to the coordinator of the M.Ed. program about the potential of each applicant to be successful in the program.
Supervision Given:
- This individual will be supervised by the Chief Innovation and Research Officer and will be a member of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
- This individual will be supported by the Director of Teacher Education and the Program Assistant for Teacher Education under the leadership of the Chair of the School of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Fully licensed teacher in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Master’s Degree or higher in Education with specialization(s) appropriate for instruction of the courses in the Professional Studies in Education for Licensure Certificate
- Approved by Franklin County Public Schools Division Superintendent (per Memorandum of Understanding)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctoral Degree or Specialist Degree in Education with specialization(s) appropriate for instruction of the courses in the Professional Studies in Education for Licensure Certificate
- Experience teaching in Franklin County Public Schools
- Experience developing and teaching courses at the undergraduate level in an online, asynchronous format
