Job Title: Helper Clerk
JOB DESCRIPTION:
As the primary contact for Safeway customers, the Helper Clerk provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service. The Helper Clerk has a number of responsibilities inside and outside the store area. The Helper
Clerk will stock and face product and creates end displays. Bags and carries out groceries for customers as needed. Cleans areas within the store. Ties up empty egg and milk crates. Assists customers with finding items in store. The Helper Clerk may be assigned to any department in the store or assist in many departments. May bring freight from the storage area to be stocked and rotated. May clean and sort produce.
JOB DUTIES:
Safeway Helper Clerks employees are generally responsible for completing the following job duties:
1. Provide customer service as currently defined by the employer within the scope of the position and within company policy.
1. Obtain stock from back room and transports to the appropriate area.
1. Rotate, condense, and stock shelves and end displays.
1. Gather and tie empty milk and egg crates.
1. Maintain cleanliness of various areas of the store.
1. Empty trash in compactor and cardboard into bailer and operate both machines. Empty trash into dumpster.
1. May be assigned to bag groceries.
1. Assist customers on sales floor.
1. Other duties as assigned.
JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ability to follow company customer service procedures. Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience.
1. Ability to interact with customers and co-workers.
1. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
1. Ability to work independently.

Pushing/Pulling:
Frequently pushes/pulls 1-35 lbs. Occasionally pushes/pulls 36-50 lbs.
Reaching:
Constant knee to shoulder level reaching for mid level shelf stocking, bagging groceries, and handling cleaning tools. Occasional overhead and at or above shoulder level reaching when stocking and facing upper shelves.
Standing:
Constant standing while on job. Sitting allowed on breaks.
Walking:
Constant walking while on job.
Climb/Balance:
Seldom climbing/balancing on ladder to reach upper shelves or change signs.
Trunk Functions:
Frequent neck rotation, bending of head, bending and stooping. Occasional twisting, crouching, squatting and kneeling.
Upper Extremity:
Constant handling/grasping to stock, face, bag groceries and clean areas. Frequent repetitive motion when stocking, facing and bagging. Seldom fine finger manipulation when facing small items.
Vision:
Use of peripheral vision and depth perception to move carts, six wheelers, and pallet jacks through crowded aisles in store, and to push carts in parking area of store with moving vehicles present. Use of near vision to read labels, lists, instructions, etc.
Hearing:
To converse with customers, provide service, answer questions, etc. To answer pages and receive instructions from other employees.
Speech:
To converse with customers, answer questions, and advise as to product location. To page other employees over intercom and give information.
