Application Scientist:
The Abstrax Application Scientist will work closely with the Research & Development department to provide technical support, trial flavors in various CPG applications, scientific applications, and an explanation of any product intricacies for clients. With that, this role will liaise with Marketing and Sales departments as needed so. To fulfill duties this role will conduct application trials, analyze data, and summarize conclusions based on the results; ultimately, track historical records, identify patterns, and predict outcomes. Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and time management are paramount as there is potential to interface with clients.
What You Will Do:
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Application Science
- Assist R&D team with formulation of end-product samples. This will be accomplished on a task and project basis. Examples include beverages, alcoholic beverages, candies, baked goods, inhalable, and vape products.
- Responsible for accurate compounding work including weighing flavor components, packing and labeling products.
- Proactively look for ways to improve the integrity and consistency of each formula being developed.
- Responsible to run a variety of application stability tests on selected formulas when necessary.
- Must clearly communicate formula issues, initiate trouble-shooting and provide reasonable solutions.
- Be available to provide analytical assistance for flavor emulsions, i.e. particle size determination and tracking stability.
Application Logistics
- Support efforts to provide domestic and foreign shipping requirements to deliver products that meet customer deadlines.
- Keep well-versed and current on labeling laws and global regulatory information.
- Support Regulatory initiatives that maintain customer satisfaction.
Raw Material Management
- Research new technologies and ingredients, interacting with suppliers on a regular basis.
- Lead alternate supplier initiatives for key raw materials and coordinate with sensory scientist for evaluation
- Document and file all findings.
Application Lab Management
- Keep the lab free from clutter.
- Responsible for maintaining a clean workbench. i.e. putting away raw materials in the cabinets to keep lab air quality optimal and wiping down counters at the end of the day.
- Clean and sanitize all used lab equipment and food equipment
Beverage Development Support
- Collaborate daily with Product Development to satisfy customer project requirements by offering, timely flavor development, flavor duplications of targeted, market products and assistance in troubleshooting issues.
- Participate in daily beverage evaluation sessions and provide sound input and direction.
- Monitor out-dates on flavors in Product Development’s flavor library. Responsible to pull and discard old samples.
- Provide flavor application support using beverage bases provided by Beverage Development.
- Attend project meetings and communicate and execute lab/project priorities effectively.
Operations Support
- Provide technical assistance whenever needed to all aspects of Quality Assurance and Manufacturing of flavors with new raw material introductions, formula commercialization, and all flavor related quality issues.
- Build a solid and trustworthy working relationship with manufacturing personnel for the ability to effectively collect, discern and implement creative solutions to the formula issues discovered on the plant floor.
- Assist Manufacturing with flavor formula scale up procedures and oversee first time runs of flavors that were developed by Flavor team.
- Lead formula improvement initiatives. Study current processing procedures; identify inefficiencies and practices that negatively affect flavor integrity from batch to batch; Run testing and offer new processing techniques and protocols wherever applicable.
- Assist Quality Assurance in troubleshooting quality issues as they arise in a timely manner.

Interdepartmental Collaboration
- Develop & maintain a strong working relationship with our Sales & Marketing, Operations, Manufacturing, Quality Control, and Purchasing teams.
- Maintain a healthy and transparent collaboration with all R&D departments.
- Routinely interact with scientists from a variety of disciplines in a collaborative manner to solve complex problems.
- Establish a solid rapport with key customers by providing reliable technical support, offering sound problem-solving leadership and by always communicating in a professional manner.

- Collaborate with marketing and product departments for product positioning and marketing

Qualities and Skills You Will Need:
- Strong communication, interpersonal, public speaking, and leadership skills. Must be personable and approachable (by panelists)
- Experience with data analysis including presenting data.
- Application science including preparation of simple product types.
- Ability to track costs of formulations.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Multifaceted, collaborative, works well independently and in a team setting.
- Ability to interface with customers and other business units as required.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in food science, chemistry, biology, or related field of science.
- At least 2 years experience in food science or application science.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
