JOB SUMMARY:
Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00pm-4:30am
Histology is an essential component to the art and science of pathology. The histology laboratory contributes a valuable service to help pathologists provide patient diagnoses. Information gained through microscopic evaluation of tissue slides prepared by histology technicians allows a pathologist to either identify or dismiss disease. The preparatory steps taken to ensure a quality diagnosis are key to this relationship.
A variety of procedures are performed to include embedding in paraffin, sectioning, staining and mounting tissue on slides.
Incumbents must demonstrate skill and knowledge of all histologic procedures, including special stains, immunohistochemical stains and equipment utilized. Incumbent must work as a team member within the laboratory. Incumbent regularly performs routine histological procedures. A departmental procedure manual is available and the Histology Manager is available in most cases for assistance in special or unusual cases. Incumbent must make decisions regarding adjustment of staining procedures for certain tissues and special requested stains.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to:
- Performs high quality histological preparations to aid in pathological diagnosis.
- Maintains equipment and supplies in clean conditions, to avoid contamination of reagents and solutions.
- Maintains equipment with documentation and reports malfunctions to manager.
- Must be able to handle stat requests and respond to emergency situations.
- Performs daily QC documentation, temperature charting and other maintenance as required.
- Applies meticulous attention to detail.
- Multitasks effectively.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT:
- Frequent sitting and standing; occasional walking and bending; occasional lifting of materials up to 40 lbs of force occasionally, and/or 20 lbs of force frequently, and /or up to 10 lbs of force constantly to move objects.
- Near visual acuity including color differentiation.
- Exposure to minimal but constant noise levels.
- Repetitive hand motions.
- Daily functions may include incidental exposure to hazards associated with:
- Automation-close proximity to moving mechanical parts.
- Chemical: (reagents, carcinogens, corrosives, flammables and fumes).
- Patient specimens and sharps.
- Incumbent may be exposed to blood products, knife cuts, acid burns and chemical fumes, appropriate precautionary measures must be followed at all times.
- Use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves and fluid resistant coats may be required if applicable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma required.
Minimum of two years' experience in microtomy as well as QC'ing IHC's; Certification preferred (HT/HTL or QIHC)
