Job Description: Surgical Scrub Technician
Title Surgical Scrub Technician
Main function Under the direction from nursing personnel and physician providers, the Surgical Scrub Technician performs direct patient care activities; assisting in patient preparation for surgery/procedure; performs tasks related to the procedure; and assists in maintaining a clean, organized and prepared work environment. Will have a working knowledge of all operating/procedure room equipment, including emergency equipment used in Code situations. Will maintain a working knowledge of surgical instruments used by the surgeons in the center, along with the care, maintenance and knowledge of various sterilization techniques used in the processing of the instrumentation.

8. Duties a) Performs specified functions to meet the requirements of each approved procedure b) Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physicians’ preference cards c) Inspects equipment for proper working condition d) Follows principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures e) Adheres to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure f) Arranges instruments according to given procedure g) Confirms that instruments work properly h) Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays i) Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and takes action according to policy j) Correctly uses, cares for, cleans, and sterilizes instruments, supplies, and equipment as directed k) Handles equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety l) Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure m) Assists in storing and stocking supplies as directed n) Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeons’ preference cards o) Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician p) Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patient’s status. q) Other duties as directed.

Requirements
Required
1. High school diploma or GED certification
2. Completion of surgical scrub technician course
3. Operating room experience
4. Strong ethical and moral characteristics
5. BLS Certification
Preferred
1. Two years’ previous operating room experience
2. ASC experience

8. Duties x) Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate vendors to obtain appropriate equipment and supplies. y) Maintains current files, records, and catalogs for equipment and sales representatives who service facility. z) Researches vendors to locate specialized equipment as requested by the medical staff and approved by the Administrator. aa) Meets with vendor representatives to review new items available and changes in prices. bb) Understands responsibility in maintaining proper levels of inventory and timely distribution. cc) Places orders in a timely manner when requisitioned by various areas of the facility. dd) Monitors orders to ensure correct and timely delivery. ee) Supervises receiving area to maintain stores securely. ff) Demonstrates appropriate response to changes in schedule to avoid delay in providing equipment and overstock of inventories. gg) Reviews schedules well in advance to anticipate any unusual high or low demand for supplies. hh) Continually communicates with the Director, Clinical Supervisors and Administrator regarding special procedure requirements. ii) Determines whether correct orders are received, tracks back orders, and rectifies incorrect charges. jj) Reviews all invoices for accuracy by coordinating packing slips and purchase orders. kk) Monitors back orders and communicates with accounts payable to facilitate accurate payment. ll) Reports any invoice discrepancies to Administrator before payment to vendor. mm) Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate systems for the collection and maintenance of records and documentation pertinent to supplies, equipment, and systems. nn) Maintains current files and records regarding orders and back orders. oo) Reviews orders at specific intervals to determine delays. pp) Maintains and frequently reviews records of warranties and preventive maintenance requirements and contracts. qq) Maintains logs of linen supplies rr) Maintains supplies and records for bio-hazardous waste management. ss) Maintains and updates supplies, pricing and cost breakdowns in inventory software tt) Performs other duties as assigned.
