Hamilton Memorial Hospital District has an immediate opening for a PRN Surgery RN. At HMHD our mission is to enhance the delivery of healthcare to our community and the surrounding area by providing accessible quality healthcare services. HMHD utilizes the premier electronic medical record system EPIC with My Chart as an amenity for patients and staff.
The Surgery RN performs the primary functions of a Registered Nurse in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of all assigned patients, ages newborn thru geriatrics in Post-Anesthesia/Operating Room on a 24 hour basis. Is responsible for meeting the established Surgical Standards of Nursing Practice and Standards of Post Anesthesia Nursing Practice (as adopted from A.O.R.N. and A.S.P.A.N.), for managing all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment in the post Anesthesia/Operating Room and for promoting teamwork with Physicians and personnel of other departments. They perform duties involving the care, packaging, cleaning, inventory control and charging of items and supplies utilized in the hospital.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assesses the number and level of personnel needed to provide quality care in the department and collaborates with the O.R. Supervisor in adjusting staff and assignments.
2. Participates in the assessment of functions and activities in Post-Anesthesia/Operating Room as they relate to other departments.
3. Assesses the delivery of nursing care in the department and identifies problems and any need for improvements.
4. Assesses the health status of all patients, prior to the surgical procedure in collaboration with the O.R. Supervisor and Anesthetist.
A. Completes a patient history and physical pertinent to the surgical procedure, but is not limited to:
1) Site preparation for procedure.
2) Patterns and methods of communication.
3) Preferred nickname.
4) Nutritional status.
5) Emotional status.
6) Patterns of coping.
7) Patient concerns during or dealing with procedure.
8) Patient understanding of procedure.
9) Patient expected outcomes from procedure.
10) Patient perception of body image.
11) Patient understanding of behaviors expected following surgical procedure.
5. Collects data from patient, family and significant others and health care providers.
6. Collects data by interview, observation, inspection, auscultation and palpation.
7. Assesses and interprets reports and records (verbalizes pertinent information among health care members):
1). Accurate identification of patient.
2). Completes Consent Form.
3). Confirmation of surgical site.
4). Vital Signs and time taken.
5). Pre-operative medications and time given.
6). Laboratory, X-ray and EKG reports.
7). Last Oral Intake.
8). Time of last voiding.
9). Other pertinent reports.
8. Organizes assessment data so that they are accurate, complete and accessible so that they
remain confidential.
9. Communicates assessment data in an orderly fashion among the health team pre-
operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively and records and revises data
appropriately.
10. Recognizes and assesses initial/slight alterations in the patient’s body systems (i.e. heart and lung sounds) and verbalizes this among members of the health team.
11. Interprets heart patterns on monitor and assesses changes in pattern, verbalizing this among members of the health team.
12. Identifies problems and plans ways to solve problems and make improvements in the P.A.R. department in collaboration with the O.R. Supervisor.
13. Plans the care for individual patients as well as directs and supervises others in the planning of patient’s care.
14. Incorporates post-operative care into expected outcomes by pre-operative teaching in collaboration with OR Supervisor that are specific to patient age, developmental abilities, cognitive abilities and cultural needs (including but not limited to:)
A. Explanation of surgical procedure.
B. Medication: Pre-operative medications, pain medications and post-operative medications.
C. Diet: Plan for progression following the procedure.
D. Exercise/Activity: Cough, turn and deep breathing techniques, ambulation and other expected behaviors or limitations.
E. Explanation of any extraneous equipment necessary following the procedure (i.e., IV, Nasogastric Tube, Foley Catheter, Hemovac Drain).
F. Self-care techniques and materials.
G. Available support systems, health information and resources that will enable the patient to understand and accept necessary modifications in body image and/or life style.
15. Holds self and staff accountable for the delivery of quality nursing care.
16. Acts rapidly and effectively, follows hospital policies and procedures and utilizes principles of management in any emergency situation.
17. Promotes harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among the health care team.
18. Keeps the Anesthetist/OR Supervisor informed on reportable situations and PAR needs.
19. Demonstrates knowledge of location, care and use of all equipment/supplies pertaining to PAR/OR/Nursing Service.
20. Demonstrates knowledge of and skill in exercising all PAR/OR sterilization procedures.
21. Demonstrates knowledge of sterile/aseptic technique and recognizes and corrects any breaks in this technique.
22. Assists in maintaining PAR/OR provides a calm and reassuring atmosphere.
23. Assists in maintaining PAR/OR is clean, organized and stocked with necessary supplies.
24. Functions as OR Staff Nurse:
1). Perform duties of Circulating Nurse
2). Perform duties of Scrub/Instrument Nurse
25. Administers IV therapy and medications timely, accurately as prescribed by physician per
hospital policy and procedure.
26. Maintains equipment competency.
27. Responsible for proper documentation of patient care and follow-up.
28. Infection Control (Universal Precautions) and Safety policies and procedures are
implemented as per hospital policy and procedure.
29. Maintains child/adolescent/adult/geriatric safety.
30. Proper assessment and implementation of meeting child/adolescent/adult/geriatric patient needs.
31. Proper communication skills with child/adolescent/adult/geriatric patient.
32. Assessment of child/adolescent/adult/geriatric patient to include educational needs of patient, family or significant other and implementation of found needs.
33. Will be familiar with all sterilization policies and procedures.
34. Is familiar with all Infection Control policies and procedures specific to her/his area.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing and compliance with the Nurse Practice Act. Specific orientation for the Operating Room/Post-Anesthesia Recovery Room.
Current license with the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, CPR Certification, ACLS Certification.
