Full Job Description

Overview:

Compass Healthcare, an freestanding, independent multi-specialty medical group dedicated to providing compassionate and comprehensive healthcare, is seeking a skilled Medical Physicist to join our team at our Radiation Cancer Center in East Lansing Michigan. At Compass Healthcare, we are committed to advancing the health of our patients and communities through physician-driven care and cost-effective health management.

Responsibilities:

The design, optimization, technical evaluation, and precise and accurate delivery of treatment plans.
Maintain quality control of measurement instruments used to calibrate all treatment equipment and patient monitoring devices (e.g., ionization chambers, electrometers, constancy check instruments, water phantoms.
Participate in the specification, selection, acceptance, and commissioning of radiation-producing equipment, accessories, and computerized treatment planning systems.
Provide clinical support which includes, but is not limited to, patient specific dose measurements, appropriate use of multi-leaf collimators (MLC’s), and special external beam treatment techniques (e.g., SRS, SBRT, IMRT, IGRT, TBI, and Electronic brachytherapy.
Maintain those aspects of the Quality Management (QM) program that involve the use of the external beam radiotherapy equipment.
Participate in the development, implementation, supervision, and review of the policies and procedures that encompass radiation therapy equipment.
Verify that all external beam radiation therapy equipment meets the manufacturer’s specifications and establish baseline performance values for new or refurbished equipment or for equipment following major repair.
Perform routine review of all patient treatment plans which includes a review of patient and dosimetric data as well as beam and machine parameters.
Participate in weekly department-wide chart rounds to ensure the fulfillment of the prescription and review any changes in dose, patient setup(s), and simulation.
Perform a weekly review of each patient’s record to ensure accuracy of calculations, appropriateness of charting data, and fulfillment of the physician’s written prescription.
Perform an end of treatment review of the patient’s entire record to affirm the fillment of the initial and/or revised prescription dose.
Serves as radiation safety officer for all Compass Divisions.
Serves as physics resource for Dosimetrists and Radiation Therapists.
Participates in the treatment planning process and provides dosimetry back-up in times of need. This includes being proficient in the use of the Center’s treatment planning system/software.
Perform special medical physics consults as ordered by the radiation oncologist(s).
Serve as Radiation Protection Supervisor to assure compliance with state and national rules pertaining to radiation safety of patients and staff.
Provides oversight of CT services with regard to radiation safety and quality assurance activities.
Responsible for the on-going licensing and registry of all MRT and CT related equipment as applicable.
Primarily responsible for all accreditation (ACR, ACRO, etc.) oversight for both CT and MRT services.
Other duties as assigned to support the mission of Compass Cancer Center

Minimum Education: A qualified Medical Physicist is an individual who is competent to practice independently one or more of the subfields in medical physics. The American College of Radiology (ACR) considers certification and continuing education and experience in the appropriate subfield(s) to demonstrate that an individual is competent to practice one or more of the subfields in medical physics and to be a Qualified Medical Physicist. The ACR recommends that the individual be certified in the appropriate subfield(s) by the American Board of Radiology (ABR), the Canadian College of Physics in Medicine, or the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP). The appropriate subfields of medical physics for this guideline are Therapeutic Radiological Physics and Radiological Physics. A qualified Medical Physicist should meet the ACR Practice Guideline for Continuing Medical Education (CME) (ACR Resolution 7, adopted in 2008).

NRC/State Approved as Authorized Medical Physicist (for RAM) and ideally the Radiation Safety Supervisor (RSS) if possible
