RED OAK LAVENDER FARM

QUALIFICATIONS:

Associates Degree in Horticulture, botany or related field or two years of hand-on professional gardening experience.
Work authorization: United States (Required)
Valid Georgia Driver’s License (with good driving record)
Greenhouse Experience: (Preferred)
Previous experience working in a public garden setting is a plus
Ability to operate hand and power garden equipment
Knowledge of or previous experience in an ornamental and flower plant setting is desired
Construction experience in building and repair of farm structures is a plus
Able to work well in a team and independent setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to sustain moderate physical exertion with full range of body motion for lifting up to 50 lbs.
Ability to work in all weather conditions
Possible out of state travel for plant and amendment pickups

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to effectively respond to multiple, changing and often conflicting priorities is essential.
Must be able to effectively interact with the general public and co-workers and peer professionals.

Full Job Description

PRINCIPAL FUNCTION: Plants and maintains display gardens and grounds on 5-acre Lavender farm in a manner consistent with Red Oak Lavender Farm’s (ROLF’s) brand and standards. ROLF a seasonal agritourism business and as we do every year, we have a scheduled/customary plan closure for business shutdown which includes closing our retail shop and farm mid-December thru end February

JOB SUMMARY:

Assist in managing all the production crops at Red Oak Lavender Farm to ensure quality salable products using the most effective and economical growing methods. Assist in development and dissemination of the appropriate growing and propagation processes and techniques. Assist in training volunteers or other employees in WPS and MSDS standards. Assure greenhouse facility and equipment is maintained and functional.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1)General garden maintenance and landscaping

2)Serve as horticulturist resource for the Garden

3)Planting, transplantation and removal of plants

4)Recognition of plant nutrition deficiencies and recognition of pest infestation and damage

5) Maintain propagation ideals and growing schedules for all ROLF production crops to ensure adequate rooting and growth according to customer requirements.

6) Set and monitor watering and fertilization schedules to maintain optimum growth.

7) Maintain mist schedules in the propagation areas.

8) Release product for pinching, harvest, shipment ensuring product meets customer’s valid requirements (i.e. moisture, height, rooting, maturity, insect and disease free, etc.)

9) Communicate quality or scheduling problems to appropriate parties in timely manner.

10) Communicate with others on growing staff as to changes in procedures, crop requirements, assignments for propagators, etc.

11) Ensure all safety rules housekeeping rules and procedures are adhered to.

12) Maintain proper growing environment in enclosed greenhouses and grow light stations.

13) Ensure schedule for proper maintenance of greenhouses, grow light stations and farm equipment is followed.

14) Coordinate with owner the need for necessary repairs and/or preventative maintenance tasks.

15) Coordinate with Inventory and Production departments as to space utilization, movement of product, availability of product for shipment, etc.

16) Assist in budgeting and inventorying materials for growing areas.

17) Required to wear a phone to be available for problem solving and providing information to staff.

18) Must have good attendance.

19) Work on special projects as assigned

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Participation in Frost Patrol either day or night.

2) Participate in weekend duty on if needed.

3) Assign workload to members of growing staff on all shifts.

4) Fill in for other growers in case of illness, vacations, meetings, or other absences.

5) Assist in training of Associate growers, Grower’s helpers, scouts, and spray personnel.

6) Maintain crop records such as pesticide applications, fertilization, fungicide and watering schedules, etc.

7) Willing to work a varied schedule with overtime, evening, and weekend hours as necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Some work is completed in greenhouse environment with temperature extremes with moist, humid conditions. Floors are frequently wet. Walks are uneven and made of concrete or Sand covered with ground cloth. Work is completed between narrow aisles. Majority of work is with plants grown outdoors. Work will be done in natural weather conditions including hot and cold temperature extremes, rain and wind. When required, wearing of personal protective equipment (i.e. Boots, respirator, Tyvex suits, goggles, gloves, etc.) Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds

Benefits:

· 30 minute paid lunch

· Two 15-minute paid breaks per 8-hour shift

· Overtime pay over 40 hours per week

Schedule:

8 hour day shift, hours may vary do to weather and workload
Monday to Friday some weekends
